Where do people in Lisbon buy groceries?
Lisbon residents shop at supermarkets of every size, small neighbourhood grocers and municipal markets. Mercado de Campo de Ourique, Mercado de Arroios and Mercado de Alvalade are neighbourhood markets with fish, meat, fruit and vegetable stalls, liveliest in the morning. Mercado da Ribeira at Cais do Sodré keeps a traditional produce section, while half of the hall is a busy food court aimed at visitors.
Feira da Ladra, the flea market at Campo de Santa Clara, runs on Tuesdays and Saturdays and sells second-hand goods rather than food. Many markets close on Sundays.
How do you get around Lisbon and what do daily costs look like?
Lisbon's metro, buses, trams, funiculars and Tagus ferries use a rechargeable transit card. You top it up at metro-station machines, either with single tickets or with stored credit, and stored credit usually works out cheaper per journey. Historic trams and funiculars cost more if you pay on board.
Typical small spends are an espresso and a custard tart (pastel de nata) at a pastry shop, a sandwich or soup at lunch, and petiscos, small shared dishes, in the evening. Tipping is optional; rounding up or leaving small change is common, and around 5 to 10 percent is usual for good table service.
How do Lisbon prices compare with the rest of Portugal?
As the capital and a major visitor city, Lisbon has higher prices for eating out, drinks and services than most Portuguese towns, especially in Baixa, Chiado, Alfama and Belém, while supermarket shelf prices from national chains are closer to the rest of the country.
In restaurants, bread, olives, butter or cheese placed on the table before you order (the couvert) are charged if you eat them, so send them back if you do not want them. Standing at a café counter often costs less than sitting on a terrace, and residential districts such as Arroios or Alvalade serve lunch menus at local prices.
