Where do people in Berlin buy groceries and everyday goods?

Most Berliners shop at supermarkets and discount supermarkets in their own neighbourhood, with drugstores for personal care and cleaning products. Weekly markets add fresh produce: the Turkish Market on Maybachufer in Neukölln runs on Tuesdays and Fridays, and Winterfeldtplatz in Schöneberg holds a market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg is a covered market hall with food stalls and regional produce. Late-night corner shops, known as Spätis, sell drinks and snacks long after supermarkets close, usually at higher prices.

How do you get around Berlin and what do small daily costs look like?

Berlin's U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and buses share one ticket system with fare zones A, B and C, and most of the city sits in zones A and B. Tickets are sold at machines, in the official app and on buses. There are no ticket barriers and inspectors check on board, so validate a paper ticket before you travel if it is not already stamped.

Small daily spends are usually bakery breakfasts, coffee and street food such as döner kebab or currywurst. In restaurants and cafés people round up or add around 5 to 10 percent, saying the total when they pay rather than leaving coins on the table.

How do Berlin prices compare with the rest of Germany?

Supermarket chains set prices largely at national level, so shelf prices in Berlin tend to be close to those in other German cities. Differences show up in cafés, bars and restaurants: central and popular districts such as Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg and parts of Kreuzberg charge more than outer neighbourhoods.

To stretch a budget, do your main shop on Saturday because shops close on Sundays, return bottles and cans for the deposit, and look for reduced stickers on fresh food near closing time.
